$182 million set for research

Canada’s scientists got a show of support from the federal government yesterday with a $182-million investment over the next two years to fund research infrastructure and attract top scientists to Canadian universities. Gary Goodyear, minister of state for science and technology, announced the funding yesterday at the broadband communications lab at McGill University. The money will be administered through the Leaders Opportunity Fund, part of the Canada Foundation for Innovation, which funds research infrastructure. It is not known how the money will be divided among institutions.
