What kinds of students are interested in a Clinical Research program? What do they expect when they are finished? What has their in-class experience been so far? We talked with our current group of students and got their input on these questions. We hope it will give you some more insights into whether or not becoming a Clinical Research Associate (CRA) or Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) would be the right career move for you.

About half of our current students have medical training from countries outside of Canada. These medical professionals are all highly educated, but their credentials do not allow them to practice medicine in Canada. Therefore, they were looking for a career where they could make the fullest use of their medical education. Some considered working in allied or technical occupations within the medical field, such as working as ECG technicians or doing laboratory work, but ultimately they decided to go into Clinical Research for two reasons: first, they wanted to work in a field, “where you would feel like you are using your brain,” and be able to draw upon the medical knowledge they have already learnt. Secondly, they have noticed that Ontario is one of the largest research hubs in the world, with hundreds of medical and pharmaceutical studies and trials taking place every day.

Other students bring equally impressive backgrounds; dentists, research nurses, PhDs, CRAs currently make up the other half of the students. Their career plans upon graduation is usually to remain in Ontario and develop their careers here. Some feel they will start out as working in a hospital settings as Assistants and Clinical Research Coordinators, while others see themselves in the industry as Clinical Research Associates. Most believe that as their career progresses, they will move between these two job titles and move between pharmaceutical firms and hospitals. They are all very excited about the rapid advances in research, which is opening up new avenues into the understanding of disease, while discovering increasingly sophisticated diagnostic techniques and the different treatment modalities that are becoming available.

These students have been enrolled in the Clinical Research program for several months, and explain that it is very intense, fast-paced and high quality program. Classes are held Mondays to Fridays, from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm, with breaks for lunch. One student remarked that her daily pattern is to “study, sleep, eat and study.” They note that while the first few courses may cover material that some of them are familiar with, such as anatomy and immunology, the classes that focus on designing and doing clinical research is a brand new experience. The College provides computers and software, but the students explain that it is helpful for incoming students to also have their own up-to-date computers, and gain as much experience as they can with programs like Microsoft Access and Excel.
